Overview
Head and neck cancers can develop in the mouth (oral cavity), throat (oropharynx), voice box (larynx), thyroid gland, salivary glands, and surrounding lymph nodes. While many symptoms are caused by benign conditions, persistent symptoms should not be ignored. Knowing the warning signs can help patients seek treatment earlier, when more and less invasive options are available.
5 Early Symptoms of Head & Neck Cancer You Should Never Ignore
1. A Lump in the Neck
A painless lump in the neck is one of the most common early signs of head and neck cancer. While swollen lymph nodes often occur during infections, any neck mass that persists for more than two weeks should be evaluated by a specialist.
2. Persistent Hoarseness
Most people experience temporary hoarseness from time to time, especially after a cold or excessive voice use. However, hoarseness or other voice changes lasting longer than three weeks may indicate a condition affecting the vocal cords or voice box (larynx). An ENT specialist can perform a thorough examination to identify the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
3. Difficulty Swallowing
Difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia, can make eating and drinking uncomfortable or challenging. Some patients describe the sensation as food getting stuck in the throat or chest. While swallowing difficulties can occur for many reasons, persistent symptoms should be evaluated to rule out conditions affecting the throat, esophagus, or surrounding structures.
4. A Mouth Sore That Doesn’t Heal
Most mouth sores resolve within one to two weeks. If a sore, ulcer, white patch, or red patch persists beyond that timeframe, it should be examined by a healthcare professional. Persistent oral lesions can sometimes be an early sign of oral cavity cancer and should not be ignored.
5. Ongoing Sore Throat or Ear Pain
A sore throat that does not improve with time or standard treatments may warrant further evaluation. Similarly, unexplained ear pain can occasionally be linked to conditions affecting the throat or surrounding areas of the head and neck. If symptoms persist for several weeks, an ENT specialist can help identify the underlying cause.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
Not all of these symptoms indicate cancer, but persistent symptoms that last more than two to three weeks should be evaluated by a Head & Neck specialist. Early diagnosis often leads to more treatment options and better outcomes. At ENT Specialty Care, our Head & Neck Cancer Program provides expert evaluation and treatment for conditions affecting the throat, mouth, voice box, thyroid, salivary glands, and neck.
